Andrew Gurza
Time to look at another awesome queer disabled person!
NSFW topics and discussions of sex
I’m still experiencing technical difficulties and have created a Google drive document for alt text readers that can be accessed here.
Andrew Gurza is a Canadian disability awareness consultant with Cerebral Palsy who focuses a lot of his work in sex positivity and sex education in regards to the sex lives of disabled people. A lot of people assume that every disabled person is asexual, and though some certainly are (hi), it's not the majority of them. Gurza works to abolish that notion and educate people on the very diverse sex lives of the disabled through DisabilityAfterDark, Bump'n, and other projects.
He's been interviewed by various media outlets, including HuffPost, and is active on various social media platforms with thousands of followers on Instagram and Twitter.
In 2017, he was in a short film, Picture This, that follows him throwing a sex positive play party for disabled people.
DisabilityAfterDark
Andrew Gurza founded this brand, which includes a blog, podcast, and presentations. He aims to break down the fears and stigma of discussions of sex, and especially sex lives of the disabled.
He has very open and honest discussions of his experiences, shares pictures, and speaks with experts and others willing to share their experiences. Though the main focus is often on sex, he discusses general disability issues, sexuality, kinks, fetishes, and the wide variety of topics of life. It provides a safe place for people to talk about everything and create a learning experience through the huge amounts of interviews.
Bump'n
Bump'n is a brand of sex toys for disabled people who have difficulty or cannot use the majority of sex toys on the market. It was founded by Andrew Gurza and his sister, Heather Morrison, in order to make sex lives of disabled people more accessible.
I've seen some created to be easier for those with arthritis to use, but none for dexterity issues beyond mild arthritis. They surveyed people and found that a whooping 90% of people surveyed would like to have something they could use! They worked with sexual health experts, occupational therapies, and designers to create something that could be used independently.
The result is Bump'n: a handsfree joystick (pun intended?) that works by attaching a sex toy to the device and then hugging the device. This allows the toys to be used without relying on fine motor skills and using large muscle groups to just "hug" the joystick. It fits several different types of toys and can be used for a variety of different anatomies.
